The PJ Patterson Institute supports education through the granting of scholarships to UWI students

On October 15, 2025, The PJ Patterson Institute for Africa Caribbean Advocacy presented two students of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with The PJ Patterson Scholarship in honour of the former Prime Minister’s 90th birth anniversary, celebrated in April 2025.

Attendees at the scholarship presentation included:
Dr. Tomlin Paul, Deputy Principal, UWI Mona;
Ms. Sandrea Maynard, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Office of Global Affairs;
Dr. Lisa Vascianne, Head of the Department of Government;
Dr. David Gosse, Head of the Institute of Caribbean Studies; and
Mr. Daniel Wizzard, one of the scholarship beneficiaries.

The two students who received the scholarships are Mr. Daniel Wizzard, a final-year Political Science student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Mr. Rojae Henry, a final-year student in Music and Performance Studies, Institute of Caribbean Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Education. Each student came with high commendations from their respective Heads of Department. The scholarships were awarded for demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

The scholarships were sponsored by the National Commercial Bank Foundation, an organization with a strong history of supporting education at all levels in Jamaican society. Named in honour of Jamaica’s sixth Prime Minister—a distinguished alumnus of The UWI and Caribbean statesman who has demonstrated decades of commitment to education and the socio-economic progress of the Region—The Most Honourable P. J. Patterson is presently the Statesman-in-Residence at The PJ Patterson Institute for Africa Caribbean Advocacy, UWI.

As part of the scholarship requirements, each student is expected to participate in The Africa Caribbean Students’ Club, a student society attached to the Institute.

The PJ Patterson Institute for Africa Caribbean Advocacy extends best wishes to the recipients of The PJ Patterson Scholarship for the academic year and expresses hope that their futures will be marked by memorable achievements shaped by service and love for the Caribbean and its people.
